Study for Cell Unit Quiz.

You need to know the Seven Characteristics of All Living Things:

Movement
Respiration
Stimuli/Sensitivity (reacting to changes in the environment)
Growth
Reproduction
Elimination (getting rid of waste)
Nutrition

You should also know the parts and jobs of a cell, specifically:

Cell Membrane:
A thin skin surrounding the cell that controls substances coming in and out of the cell.

Homework

1) Finish language classwork:
Use each of our word study words in an original sentence demonstrating their meaning. (mono-)

2) Math:
Practice 2x2 multiplication using the traditional algorithm (dog worksheet).

Math Homework

Complete worksheet with six multiplication problems using the area model.
Due tomorrow(Wednesday).

Homework

Students will be working on affixes (prefixes and suffixes) and Greek and Latin roots throughout most of this trimester. This week's prefix is "PRE." Students have a word list and definitions to review and study throughout the week. Today's class work was to write each word 3-5 times and to break each word into syllables. Most students finished in class, but please ask students to show you their words and work.

Report Cards

Fifth grade students received their report cards today. Grades are mostly based on district unit assessments.

Spelling/Vocabulary Quiz tomorrow: 12/5

prefix meaning, and word meaning. Our current reading unit includes instruction and assessment of prefixes and Greek and Latin roots.

Math Homework

Students have a worksheet tonight simply to practice order of operations skills. It should only take about 15-30 minutes for most. If they spend 30 minutes but do not finish, please write a little note on the paper signifying that they tried.

Xtra Math

Our current math unit is on Order of Operations. Many students are not proficient in their fact fluency, which will add an additional level of difficulty for this work. Students have been given accounts for an online program called Xtra math, which will help students with their basic skills in operations. Today, they all received a family letter with log-in information.  Please ask them to share this letter with you. They have already logged in at school and have had an introduction to the program. It is STRONGLY recommended that students spend 20 minutes or so a night on this site, especially on nights when there is no other math homework.

Autumn Breakfast

We would like to have a fall breakfast to celebrate the completion of two literacy units: opinion writing and literature circles. Each student is reading a novel for this unit. Students will have a daily reading assignment as well written notes to complete before the next day's class.  They have some time in class to complete this work, but will need to finish any remaining reading and notes at home.
